Original Songs by D. A. Caughey

Here are links to a few original songs; only in the past few years have I actually written any songs that I'm willing to perform in public. The songs below were inspired by the themes of the Ithaca Festival in recent years, and were used by First Baptist as marching music for their entries in the Festival Parades.

Songs written for Ithaca Festival Parades

The theme of the 2014 Ithaca Festival was Rhythm and Rhyme. First Baptist usually marches in the Festival Parade, and 2014 FBC parade organizer Marlene Sack decided the First Baptist theme should be Beat your feet on heaven's street! She asked if I could think of a good song with a nice beat that she could play from a boom-box mounted on the roof of her car during the parade, and I decided to try to write one. Here is the song that the FBC crew marched to in 2014:

The theme of the 2015 Ithaca Festival was Better Together. This song virtualy wrote itself when I started thinking about the Festival theme and its resonance with the ideals of First Baptist. Here is the song that the members of First Baptist marched to in the 2015 Festival Parade:

2018 marked the start of the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, on the 50th anniversary of the original Poor People's Campaign, led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. First Baptist voted to become an Endorsing Organization for the Campaign, and it seemed natural to make this the focus of our march in the 2018 Ithaca Festival Parade. I wrote the song Where One is Poor, with each of its first four verses focusing respectively on poverty, systemic racism, militarism, and ecological devastation, the four main concerns addressed by the Campaign.
